Want a Smooth Relocation? Be Nice to Your Movers!

For the professional movers that make easy relocations possible, there’s little gratitude from the people they move. While it’s true that they’re simply doing their job, it can be tough to handle insults, nasty tempers, and finicky people day in and day out.
A little kindness can go a long way, and that certainly holds true when it comes to the pros. Being nice and respectful to the movers you hired can really make a difference on moving day. If you really want to accomplish a smooth move, then make your movers feel welcome. Here are some ideas to keep in mind before moving day:
- Movers that arrive in the morning should be welcomed with a steaming cup of joe. Go to a donut shop or bagel joint before they arrive and pick up some provisions for them. Enjoy breakfast together and have a little chat with them, which can really help all of you get on the same page for your moving plans.
- Always stay available for any questions your movers may have. That means you should never stray too far from where they are working, so you can be easily accessible to them. On the same note, you don’t want to hover in the way of their work. Although it’s your precious stuff that they’re handling, you also have to remember that they’re the pros.
- Moving is hard work, and all of the labor will quickly deplete any body of fluids. Provide your movers with some fresh bottles of water. Keep them handy in a cooler full of ice if you’re moving your refrigerator.
- Once they get to your new home, offer to buy them lunch or dinner, depending on what time they arrive. Instead of immediately heading for the phone to order a few pizzas, ask them what they prefer to eat. Since ordering pizza is a quick and easy no-brainer, you can imagine how often movers eat the stuff during any given week.
- After all is said and done, thank them for the moving services they provided you with a tip. A good amount is $20 per mover, but if they did a great job (which they will after all the kindness you showed) then feel free to tip a bit extra.
