Five All Natural Sweeteners to Sweeten Up Your Move
Posted on March 8th, 2011 by Paulina Aguilera
Your moving day has finally arrived. True to your word, you wake up with the rising of the sun to get your relocation underway as soon as possible. But to really get your day started off on the right foot, you just have to have a cup of your favorite coffee.
Before you reach for the sugar, try to think of all the times you experienced sugar crashes from all the creamers and sweeteners you have used over the years. Moving day is definitely not the day for a sugar crash. There’s a way around the lethargic feeling you get by consuming too much refined sugar. These are the five all natural sweeteners you need to help you keep your energy level up as you relocate:
Agave Nectar
Similar in hue and texture as honey, agave nectar comes from the plant that gives us tequila, so you know it has to be good. There are three types of agave nectar: light, medium, and amber. The darker the color, the stronger the flavor of the agave plant. The beauty of this all natural sweetener is that it ranks low on the glycemic index, making it a great sugar alternative for diabetics.
Fructose
This all natural sweetener comes from fruits and honey. It’s similar in appearance to that of refined sugar, but releases more slowly in our systems than sugar does. You also need less of it than you do regular sugar, with half a cup of fructose equating one cup of sugar.
Rice Syrup
Rice syrup is usually found in Asian recipes and drinks. It is made from rice starch that is turned into a complex sugar called maltose. Rice syrup also has some nutritional perks – it has small amounts of B vitamins.
Sucanat
Sucanat is an abbreviated word that stands for “sugar cane natural.” It comes from evaporated sugar cane juice, and has more vitamins and minerals than refined sugar. The flavor of sucanat is reminiscent of molasses, and can be used to replace sugar in baked goods and your morning coffee.
Stevia
Stevia is the all natural sweetener of the hour as more people use it in place of sugar in their weight loss regimens. Since it contains zero calories but is oftentimes just as sweet as sugar, stevia is the perfect calorie-free alternative to waist-expanding sugar. Make sure you get pure stevia in either the liquid form or the powder form, since many companies are now marketing on the popularity of this supplement with non-natural methods.
Give these all natural sweeteners a try with your moving day coffee. You will feel perked up and ready to tackle your challenging move without the threat of a sugar crash to worry about!
