Convenient Ways to Save Money on Your Furniture Purchases

Posted on July 23rd, 2010 by Alejo Tenutta

Are you moving and need new furniture? Are you working with a tight budget? If you can answer yes to these questions, these moving tips are perfect for you. The following are ways in which you can save valuable amounts of money on your next furniture purchases.

Assembling Your Own Furniture:

Stores such as IKEA are famous for their affordable furniture, only there’s a catch. Their furniture doesn’t come assembled, which is why their prices are so low. But with a little bit of elbow grease and time, putting together one of their dressers or nightstands is relatively simple. All you have to do is unfold those instructions, grab that screwdriver and hammer and prepare to put together your new bedroom set. But if the idea of different nuts and bolts has you nervously sweating, call some friends and make it a group event. Late night pizza and some cold refreshments will be the perfect reward for their assistance.

Painting Your Own Furniture:

There are several stores that sell already assembled furniture, but without any finish. Purchasing items from a store like this will be much more affordable and applying the finish yourself is incredibly easy. Just make your way over to your nearest home improvement store and pick up some stain. This will allow you to choose whichever color you prefer, such as a light maple or dark-toned cherry. Stains such as these can be applied either with a brush or rag, so make sure to purchase some rubber gloves and plastic sheeting as well. Before you know it, you will have brand new furniture and will have saved considerable amounts of cash.

Picking Up Furniture at Garage Sales:

There’s no shame in scouring through various neighborhood garage sales in your vital search for furniture. More often than not, other people sell their furniture in garage sales because they too are moving and perhaps don’t have room for particular pieces. This means that you can discover some serious gems amongst the rubble laid out before you. So as you push past rusty bicycles and outdated board games, rejoice in the fact that you now have that much needed wall unit for a ridiculously low price.
