Your Kid Is Going Off to College: What They Must Have
Posted on July 27th, 2010 by Alejo Tenutta
Unfortunately, there always comes that time where a child must leave the grasp of their parents’ hold and move into their college dorm. Now while the amounts of excessive partying, procrastination and unhealthy eating may differ from child to child, there are essentials that each must have in their room. Here are a few tips for those concerned parents wanting to know what their kid will need in order to transition smoothly from your parental guidance to total independence.
Desk:
We can only hope your child will utilize their desk for homework and not as storage for their unopened text books. But if they are, then make sure the desk is compact yet has sufficient amount of space. How do we know if it’s large enough? Simple; if it can hold a laptop or textbook, while still having enough room for a notebook or writing pad, then it’s spacious enough. Keep it as small as possible and easy to assemble as well because students rarely stay in the same dorm room for long and having to relocate it will eventually happen. Avoid anything made of plastic; it won’t last long, especially during the wear and tear of college life.
Fridge:
Now obviously we’re not talking a state-of-the-art fridge, where your kid can store filet mignon and Dom Perignon, but a small one where they can store certain essentials. They just move and are away form their usual commodities at home. Having a small fridge allows your child to conveniently store it by their bed or desk and store food such as lunch meats and water bottles. Due to the size limitations of a dorm room, this will allow your child to have his/her own fridge and not have to munch on greasy fast-food burgers or late-night pizza every night.
Closet Organizer:
Since most closet space in a dorm is likely cramped, it’s good to purchase some type of useful organizer. Simply go to a department store or home improvement shop and there is surely something that will work for your particular situation. This will allow your child to utilize maximum space and avoid a swamp of dirty clothes scattered throughout the dorm room.
