Move to Virginia Beach for Endless Fun in the Sun

Posted on August 18th, 2010 by Paulina Aguilera

What do you get when you combine history, stretches of beautiful beaches, pristine wildlife habitats, and oceanfront bistros? Virginia Beach, of course! Appease your inner child while expanding your cranium when you relocate to Virginia’s largest city. As a top tourist destination (over 2 million people visit this resort city every year), Virginia Beach offers the lucky residents who live here 365 days of endless activities, ranging from summer hikes to quality winter surfing.

Moving here is the ideal way to connect with American history, since Virginia Beach’s Cape Henry was the first location British colonists spotted on their wooden vessels when founding the New World. Virginia Beach boasts 18 locations registered with the National Register of Historic Places, including one of the oldest Virginian homes from the days when America was merely a cluster of colonies. Add to your knowledge of American days gone by when you visit the many historic spots in this city.

Virginia Beach is also the location of the annual East Coast Surfing Championship. The many jetties in the area result in long, clean breaks, and the agreeable surf has made it a surfer’s ideal location to ride the tide. The ocean-side activities don’t end there, however. If you prefer not to wade out into the deep expanses of the Atlantic with a surfboard in tow, then stick to the shores where the marine life comes to you in the form of the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Center. Here, you will learn about the different shark species common in the Chesapeake region, from the tame nurse shark to the round-snouted brown shark. There is also a sea turtle exhibit to explore, as well as a nature trail outside of the oceanfront aquarium.

To get your heart rate up while taking in the vast natural beauty surrounding Virginia Beach, hit one of the many parks in the area. The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is highly recommended for hours of wonder in a habitat that is well over 9,000-acres large. Rolling dunes of fine sand, quietly lapping ponds, and several barrier islands highlight the original landscape that the first colonists glimpsed after the grueling ordeal of antiquated sea travel.

When you want a good cup of joe on a weekend, go to the 3-mile stretch of boardwalk by the beach to get your java going. Get a table on the outside, and you may catch a glimpse of wild dolphins dancing in the rolling tide early in the morning.

Moving to Virginia Beach will provide a lifetime of activities to keep you happy. From the beautiful surrounding wetlands, to the rich history of this city by the sea, there is no place that exists in planet that is quite like Virginia Beach.

  1. Wonderful post for the beach lovers… To hang out in beaches during holidays is a great experience. I wonder if we could reside near beach we could hang out in sand whenever we want. Coolllll. VA beach is also famous for its historical places. Statue of Neptune along the 3-mile stretch boardwalk is one among them. The King Neptune statue was built in honor of the Neptune Festival, which is a local festival held each September.

  2. Great post, it highlights the many reasons to consider Virginia Beach as your home. Not only does Virginia Beach offer all those great activities and parks it is also centrally located on the East Coast. Florida is only a hour 12 drive! We have the largest sea port on the East Coast supporting a healthy economy making it one of the best cities to work in!
