MovingCost.com - South Bead, INThe first thing people usually think when they hear the name of the city called South Bend is Notre Dame. This is pretty fair, considering the university has established itself has one of the most popular and prestigious schools in the nation. But besides the University of Notre Dame (and its thousands of students who go through college moving day at the beginning of the semester) their popular football team, what else is there to do in this town? If you’ve undergone a recent residential moving excursion to the city and would like to learn more about your new surroundings, then read on.

For starters, South Bend is home to one of the best water parks in America, the East Race Waterway. Aquatic lovers can enjoy whitewater rafting down the 1,900 foot waterway, and enjoy the sights of the beautiful natural surroundings of downtown South Bend. Just be sure to bring an extra set of clothes, because you’ll surely get wet.

Now if you’re a chocolate lover, then visiting the South Bend Chocolate Museum is an absolute must. You’ll know you’re in for a treat from the minute you walk in and you’re greeted by a three-foot tall cocoa bean named Koko that chants “We love chocolate!” And as you can guess, the main theme of the entire museum revolves around the sweet treat. You’ll have an opportunity to view different chocolates from all over the world, including an ancient Mayan chocolate pot; you’ll even learn where the word chocolate was first used in English. You may want to carry a bottle of water with you, because chances are you’ll be consuming a whole bunch of chocolate.

Now maybe you don’t really care for water too much and you don’t have much of a sweeth tooth; that’s just fine. The Potowatomi Zoo is the oldest zoo in the state Indiana and features over 400 animals. The zoo is hosting Party for the Planet day on April 22, so if you’re planning moving there soon, you’ll just have to stop by and check it out. If you’ll be there within the next month, Endangered Species Day takes place on May 22; keep your calendars open.

There’s probably no other way to get a better view of the city than with the West Washington Walking Tour. Here you can walk along one of the oldest streets in the state while viewing historic artifacts such as the First Presbyterian Church, the Rose Morey Lamport House and the Remedy House.

Now that any pre-conceived notions of South Bend being only a college town are out of your head, hurry up and get rid of those movers – you’ve got a brand new town to explore!

You’re so right, but don’t tell anyone else how great South Bend is. We’re just the right size and love it like it is.
