How to Properly Inspect Your Kitchen Cabinets

Posted on July 20th, 2010 by Alejo Tenutta

Our learning center blog brings you step by step instructional on things you should or can do when moving to a new residence. Today’s blog is going to mention how inspecting your kitchen cabinets can make the difference between an expensive kitchen remodel, and a simple touch up.

1. The first step should be to check the sturdiness of the existing kitchen cabinet. If it’s too old, the screws are likely loose and it would have to be completely replaced. Give the cabinets a quick tug and see how much they actually move. If you hear any cracking or too much give, then assume that the cabinets will have to be swapped.

2. Hinges are usually something that you’ll want to look at as well. If only a few are rusted, then replacing them will be extremely simple and cost-effective. If they are all rusted, then replacing them will obviously become more strenuous for you and your pocketbook. Also make sure to check if the hinge has caused too much damage on the cabinet, this means it will be difficult to simply replace.

3. Check the inside of the cabinets, search for mold, water damage, or cracking. Obviously minor damaged spots here and there are not a significant issue, but you do want to stay away from things that can affect your health. Mold anywhere is dangerous but especially around your dishes, glasses, and silverware.

4. Inspect the condition of the cabinet doors. Remember that if they seem outdated and beat-up, they can easily be replaced. Purchasing new doors is relatively inexpensive and simple to install. Changing the cabinet doors can also upgrade the appearance of your kitchen. So remember that if the cabinet is structurally fine, all you have to do is replace the doors for a nice face-lift.

Follow these simple steps as soon as you relocate to your new residence and ensure the safety and proper functionality of your kitchen cabinets.
