How to Properly Childproof Your Kitchen

For many parents, the nightmare of having your child injure themselves because of your neglect is traumatizing, which is why childproofing various areas in your home is so important. One of the most essential locations to childproof is your kitchen, because children can easily encounter hazardous chemicals, sharp knives, or even hot stoves. That being said; here are few tips on how to childproof your kitchen when moving into your new residence.
The first few things you should take into consideration are hazardous chemicals. One unfortunate sip of these and your child can be at serious risk, so it’s vitally important to safe guard them from your curious child’s grasp. Make sure that all bottles of chlorine bleach, ammonia, and even medicines have child-resistant caps, this will help prevent any mishap if your child finds them. Also note that you can purchase less dangerous cleaning products such as non-chlorine bleach, vinegar, borax, beeswax, mineral oil, and compressed-air drain openers.
Now anything from wine glasses to sharp utensils should also be taken into consideration. Take the time to always store these things in higher cabinets, far from your child’s reach and preferably with latches that will help prevent your child’s access. If you happen to notice that your child is fascinated with opening cabinets, designate one of them for safer products and objects. Here your child can play with wooden spoons, Tupperware, etc.
Now when it comes to toasters, coffeemakers, and stoves, your child can easily burn their hand. For electronics, try to unplug them whenever they’re not in use and make sure to roll up and hide the plug. Try to use the back burners on your stove as much as possible; this will help prevent any accident in which your child reaches up to touch the stove.
The key to childproofing your kitchen when relocating into your new residence is to simply take the necessary precautions. Take time out to sit down and write all of the possible dangers a child can encounter within the kitchen space. Anything from sharp objects to small foods should be taken into consideration. Also remember that your child will be curious, so try to set up safe places and objects in the kitchen that will keep them entertained.
