Moving In With Roommates: How to Deal With It
Posted on April 22nd, 2010 by MovingCost.com
When moving to a new place where you’re going to have roommates, both parties have to make some compromises. If you deal with the situation productively, moving in with roommates can produce some of the best relationships you’ll ever have in your life.
The last thing you want is to share a household with someone you are having a bad relationship with. Here are a few tips to follow and remember when you move in with one or more roommates so everybody involved can keep their sanity.
- Hire a service when searching for roommates. Relocation services often specialize in finding roommates that are compatible with your personality and lifestyle when making a move. Potential roommates place an ad with these services and then the person looking to move places an ad as well. The relocation services then find matches between the ads. You can search through dozens of relocation services online.
- Create a written contract. Conflicts with roommates flare up when neither party knows what is expected of them. With a written set of guidelines that everybody signs, all of the roommates know what is accepted in the household.
- Communicate. The most important aspect of getting along with roommates is communication. Does it bother you when they don’t wash their own dishes? Do you hate when they have people over passed a certain time? Communicate calmly and rationally and you’ll see most problems go away before they even become a problem.
- Hire a moving company. When first moving in with roommates, hire a moving company to move your belongings into the new place. This will help prevent any scratches or damages to the place that could result in major arguments before you even spend the first night with your new roommates.
