How to Inspect Your Property Prior to Moving in

Posted on June 18th, 2010 by Shaun Pryce

Prior to moving to a new property there are several responsibilities you must take care of to ensure your safety and comfort in your new home. Many things may seem to be petty, but most of the time, it is the petty things that come back to bite you. So get a jump on it and nip it in the bud early. Something important you want to do prior to moving to a new home is inspecting it. This inspection will allow you to see exactly what needs to be fixed and/or cleaned.

First, you want to self inspect the home. Walk the perimeter of the property and simply look for trash, ant mounds, or any other hazards that may be present. Narrow your attention to the outside of the house. Check for mold, fungi, holes or cracks that may cause future problems for your home. You will definitely want to take note of where exactly these threats are.

Once you have checked the outside of the house, move to the interior and do the same thing. Make sure all of the windows and doors open, close, lock and unlock how they are supposed to. Take a look in the basement and attic, if there are any. Take note of any smells or noises you hear as well. You will want to become familiar with the concept of the foundation and structure so you may be aware of any obvious problems that can arise.

A professional inspector will always catch something that the untrained eye has missed. Find a professional inspector before finalizing any contracts, as the deadlines for inspections can come rather quickly. You can find inspectors online, professional organizations, or ask your realtor. In some states, inspectors must be licensed, so be sure check credentials when the inspector shows up.

Finally your inspection is complete. Now it is simply a matter of fixing the problems. In some instances, the current owner can reimburse you for the costs connected with repairs of defects. It is very important to look into that. Once your home is inspected, repaired and clean, let Movingcost.com’s movers move you into your new humble abode. That is, after all, the best move you could make!
