MovingCost.com - Essential OilsWho wants to walk into their new home and get a whiff of the stale stench of movers, dust and musk? We know we don’t. Through our blog, MovingCost.com provides a plethora of information and ideas for homemaking, such as picking hardwood floors and decorating. Today, we will assist you with tips on how to get rid of that old house smell with your very own essential oil techniques. They will naturally permeate clean, bright fragrances that last, without any harmful side effects.

If you don’t know too much about essential oils, don’t fret. Now that you are moving into a new home, it is a perfect time to uncover their potential. Unlike those plug-in devices and temporary spray fragrances that simply cover up smells, do-it-yourself essential oil blends contain no mystery ingredients, such as volatile organic compounds, and will not deplete the ozone layer.

MovingCost.com - Essential OilsEssential oils can fit into every aspect of our daily lives. They are natural remedies that can keep you awake just as soon as they will soothe your aches. Though purchasing oils may seem costly at first, a few drops is all it takes to work wonders in various ways, which is totally worth it. Packages and individual bottles can be found at any specialty health food store or easily online. MovingCost.com encourages you to experiment with multiple scents, such as these basic selections:

  • Lavender is calming and blends well with others
  • Lemon is used in house cleaning and is the epitome of clean
  • Peppermint, renowned for its energy, is a perfect pick-me-up
  • Chamomile is known for its soothing floral and citrus-y aroma
  • Bergamot is deep, enhances mood and is used to treat depression

Scents for the Living Room

MovingCost.com - Essential OilsBegin your scent renewal project in your living room, the center of the physical home. The best fragrances for this special place are stimulating yet not overpowering, since you want to encourage connection, communication and comfort. Our recommended oils are cedarwood, chamomile and bergamot, which boost mood by balancing and complimenting each other. Blend the oils (formula to follow), place in a lovely glass jar and stand twigs or reeds that have been soaked in the mixture inside.

The formula:

  • 20 drops of peaceful chamomile for a floral hint
  • 30 drops of cedarwood for an earthy, sweet woodiness
  • 50 drops of deep and balmy bergamot to tie them together

Scents for the Bedroom

MovingCost.com - Essential OilsNext is the bedroom, an important part of your life. Getting acquainted with this room may take some time and requires conscious effort to make it a comforting escape. The optimal plant-derived oils to promote sleep and intimacy are lavender and ylang ylang. As we’ve stated before, lavender is lush yet calming and lightly blends with other oils. Ylang ylang, with its exotic, sweet-smelling profile, is a perfect compliment. Together, their delicately floral redolence will create a spa-like aura.

To make your bedroom smell lovely, try this linen spray:

  • Mix 30 drops of lavender with 5 drops of ylang ylang in an empty spray bottle.
  • Fill remainder with distilled water and shake well.
  • Spray generously on all fabrics, including bedding, curtains and towels.

Scents for the Office

MovingCost.com - Essential OilsFor the office, you want to feel pepped up. Though you may like to have calming lavender around, it may lull you to sleep. Instead, try a lively mixture of rosemary, peppermint and grapefruit to increase productivity and keep you alert. A sachet is convenient in the office setting because you can utilize the heat generated by your laptop. All you need are thin felt squares to place under your laptop. Place a dab of this blend around the edges of the felt and the heat will enhance the fragrances:

  • 30 drops of grapefruit, 15 of rosemary and 5 of peppermint

Kitchens and bathrooms scarcely need oils. Cooking a delicious meal will amplify a kitchen and soaking in a luxurious bath with homemade bath bombs will make your bathroom smell heavenly for hours. Essential oils play key roles in the rooms where you spend the most time, so experiment today and see, or smell, what a refreshing difference they can make.

  1. Very interesting article. I love experimenting with do-it-yourself home fragrances, but for those times when I’m just too tired or can’t find the motivation, I often light a scented candle or open a reed diffuser. Reed diffusers are similar to the ideas you describe as they, too, rely on essential oils to give your home an uplifting fragrance.

    Thanks
